Irish Gaelic: name derived in the early Middle Ages from Anglo-Norman PIERS (SEE Piers). Piaras Feiritéar (1600–53) was a Kerry chieftain and poet. In the 20th century Piaras has been used as a Gaelic form of the popular nationalist name PEARCE (SEE Pearce).
